A run of three games without defeat came to an end on Sunday evening when the Boys in Brown lost 2-0 at Leipzig. The Saxony outfit proved extremely effective in the first half, taking a two-goal lead with their only attempts on goal through Benjamin Šeško and Xavi Simons. A second-half improvement boosted by a red card for Leipzig's Willi Orban was not enough to ward off the defeat.

FC St. Pauli made a successful start to the second half of the season, winning 2-0 at FC Heidenheim on Saturday afternoon. In a crunch clash between two sides battling relegation, a strong defensive showing was the key. Johannes Eggestein opened the scoring from the spot in the 25th minute before Morgan Guilavogui put the game to bed in second-half stoppage time, moments after Heidenheim had had a goal disallowed for offside.

The Bundesliga resumes after the short winter break with the visit of third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt to the Millerntor. In the run-up, head coach Alexander Blessin too questions from the media at the customary pre-match news conference.
