Blessin: "We got our reward with the point but it could have been more"

The Boys in Brown looked back at the 1-1 draw at VfL Wolfsburg with mixed feelings. Though they were satisfied with the performance, they were also frustrated at coming away with just a point. And no one was happy with the penalty that led to the equaliser.

Head coach Alexander Blessin: "We gave a decent performance and managed a lot of what we set out to do. We took the lead from a set piece but even before then we had some good turnovers where the final pass and the finish could have been a bit tidier. It did look good, though. We always come away with something when we go 1-0 up but today the referee had other ideas. It's hard to take when you look at the situation that led to the penalty and see the slight tug that way. Wolfsburg got their second wind after that and created two big chances, but Niko kept us in the game. If they hadn't got the equaliser, it would have ended 1-0. That might be hypothetical, but I'm convinced that's what would have happened. We've suffered a lot in recent games. Tomorrow I'll probably say it's good to get a point at Wolfsburg. We can be very pleased with the performance. We got our reward with the point but it could have been more. Our focus turns to Hoffenheim now and we want to get three points."

Jackson Irvine: "It was a very open game with lots of transitions and chances at both ends. We have a world-class goalkeeper who secured us a point near the end with an outstanding save. It's a point we can build on. It ended the run of defeats, though we could have won the game as well. After a very good week in which we talked a lot about the situation we're in, we put in a good performance despite making the odd mistake here and there and fully deserved the point."

Siebe Van der Heyden: "We played well and it's shame we didn't win in the end. I felt we were going to win it, and so did the others. I can't understand the decision for the penalty. I did tug his shirt briefly but then I let go and only then did he go to ground. And he only went to ground when he realised he wasn't going to get the ball. There's not a lot more I can say. I'm happy I could help the team initially with my goal. I won't go home feeling happy just because I scored. At the end of the day you want to win games and today we didn't do that. We have to keep our heads up and prepare for the next game."

Ralph Hasenhüttl (Wolfsburg head coach): "We're suffering at home from the fact that we go behind when it's tight like this game was. We don't give much away, but we are conceding. And our finishing isn't good enough for us to take the few chances we do get. We don't need many away from home and are clinical, but at home we huff and puff but don't stick the ball in the net. Today we faced a team who were kept finding a way to play their way out of trouble. Our gegenpressing wasn't good. After the break we changed things round to add more energy and structure to our play, but we only had punch in our play when we made some more changes. We tried to get behind their backline with our pacier players and it worked. That's how the penalty came about as well as the big chance just before the end. For me the penalty made up for the one we didn't get for the handball near the end. All things considered, one penalty was OK."
