SCHULTZ: "THE SMALL MISTAKES WE MADE ARE PUNISHED AT THIS LEVEL"

After the 2-1 DFB Cup defeat at Union Berlin, we jotted down all the post-match reaction in the mixed zone.

Head coach Timo Schultz: "I think Union were worth their win in the end. They created a lot of pressure in the first half. The small mistakes we made are punished at this level, so we go back to Hamburg having to live with the fact that we've been knocked out. We have a day to feel sad now and then we go again in the league, where we still have high ambitions."

Leart Paqarada: "We made a good start to a hard-fought contest against a team who pushed us to the limit physically. We held our own well and, in my opinion, took a deserved lead and then started the second half well. Unfortunately, we made two mistakes that shouldn't happen but do and were punished for it."

Simon Makienok: "I'm gutted. We were in front and almost in the dressing room at half-time. Neither Union goal came from situations where they passed their way through us. They were more down to our mistakes. That's part and parcel of the game, of course. These things happen and you try to sort it out regardless, but today we ended up conceding twice unfortunately. It's disappointing because our play was very well structured and we defended well. We knew what to expect and we performed very well, especially at the back. We had some chances as well. It's not a nice feeling but we can still be proud of our performance."

Lars Ritzka: "We were a bit unlucky in the end because we were well in the game really. We had high hopes going into the game, took the lead and then it was how things are at this level. We made one mistake too many and were punished for it straightaway. We threw everything at it towards the end and it was a high-intensity game. It's annoying, simple as that, we gave as good as we got but all in all we made the one mistake too many."

Urs Fischer (Union Berlin head coach): "We played very well in the first half. We had a good mix of passing play, long balls up top and pressure on the second balls but suddenly found ourselves behind out of the blue. The players showed a great attitude though against all adversity. Over the 90 minutes we deserved to win."
