Aigbekaen signs professional terms

FC St. Pauli have handed a senior professional contract to Romeo Aigbekaen. The striker has run out for the Under-23s thus far but has been a regular member of the training group in recent months and featured in the Bundesliga squad for the first time against Werder Bremen.

Aigbekaen learned his trade in the youth academy of FC Köln before joining the Under-19s of city neighbours Viktoria Köln at the start of the 2022/23 campaign. In the following season he played his football for FC Düren, where he contributed two goals and two assists in the 12 appearances in the fourth-tier Regionalliga West. Aigbekaen joined St. Pauli's Under-23s this season and has scored six goals and made another two in 17 Regionalliga Nord outings to date.

Reaction to the deal

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "After having a little time to acclimatise towards the end of last year, Romeo has performed very well for the Under-23s and has therefore earned his chance in the senior squad. He has very good attributes, both in physical and footballing terms. We're delighted that Romeo wants to take the next steps in his development with us."

Head coach Alexander Blessin: "Romeo has given a very good account of himself since joining the club. He demonstrated his dynamism and finishing qualities in the friendly at Braunschweig, but like all young players he needs patience to become accustomed to the standard required and our requirements, so both he and we need to carry on being assiduous in working on his game."

Romeo Aigbekaen: "I'd like to thank the club officials for the trust they've placed in me. When I moved to Hamburg, I obviously hoped to put myself in the frame for the senior squad. Having now taken this first step, I see it as an incentive to keep investing everything in my future."
