Wagner: "I'm already looking forward to running out at the Millerntor for the first time"

The Boys in Brown began preparations for their first Bundesliga campaign in 13 years on Monday, among them new SC Freiburg loan signing Robert Wagner. On Wednesday, the midfielder faced the media for the first time.

Robert Wagner on…

...his first impressions: "They're very positive. I've settled in very well. It's been an exciting first few days. Hamburg is a big city, way bigger than Freiburg and Fürth. I went for a little walk round town and had a look at everything. The weather is new for me as well, all four seasons in one day (he laughs)."

...his reasons for moving to FC St. Pauli: "It's another league higher and thus a step forward. I want to develop as a player and made a conscious decision to go to a bigger club. St. Pauli are a big club. It's perfect for the next stage of my development."

...the change of coach after he signed his contract: "I was on holiday when I read about it. I didn't give it too much thought and carried on enjoying my holiday. Fabian Hürzeler was a part of my decision but not the decisive reason. Coaches coming and going is a part of football. Players are professional enough to accept that and adapt. For me it's a new step in my development that I want to take."

...his first impressions of training and expectations on the training camp: "Training is very intensive with lots of gegenpressing and small game-related drills. I'm familiar with the intensity from my time at Fürth under Alexander Zorniger. There are some similarities, we had some of the game-related drills at Fürth as well. We'll focus more on tactics at training camp and go into even more detail than previously. I want to get to know the team better when we're together there 24/7."

...the qualities he wants to add: "I'm a strong runner who likes getting stuck in and driving the game forward. I win balls in the front third and look to create transition situations."

...playing for Fürth against the Boys in Brown last season and players who may have impressed him: "I can't really single out any player, everything simply came together, which was apparent in both games. In the first 11 v 11 here I noticed a lot of patterns are still in evidence and I still have to adjust to them.“

...the special Millerntor atmosphere: "I did notice it when I was taken off just after St. Pauli had made it 3-2. It was superb. It was my first game at the Millerntor. They're moments you don't forget in a hurry. I watched a few videos of the team running out and I had goosebumps. I'm already looking forward to running out at the Millerntor for the first time."
