Wagner joins on loan

The Boys in Brown have made their first new signing for next season, taking central midfielder Robert Wagner on loan from SC Freiburg after director of sport Andreas Bornemann reached a corresponding agreement with the management of the Bundesliga club.

Wagner learned his trade in the SC Freiburg youth setup and progressed through the ranks as far as the second team, for whom he scored four goals and made another four in a total of 48 appearances in the third division. He also featured in the Bundesliga squad on several occasions, playing four times and also on one occasion in the Europa League. Last season Wagner went on loan to Greuther Fürth, making 32 competitive appearances in the second division and DFB Cup (four goals, five assists). He has played a total of 22 games for Germany at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level (three goals, one assist).

Reaction to the deal:

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "Robert has gained match practice at a high level in various competitions in recent years and his skill set matches what we were looking for in central midfield. He's also played for teams who, like us, attach importance to playing active football and maintaining possession of the ball. We're therefore confident he'll settle in quickly and play a good role next season."

Head coach Fabian Hürzeler: "I'm looking forward to working with Robert. He's very assured on the ball, offers himself as an out ball and likes to drive towards goal, where he can be a dangerous finisher or set up his teammates. He also has strengths off the ball, where he's very mobile, gets the tackles in and wins possession."

Robert Wagner: "I'm very excited about the new challenge at FC St. Pauli and am looking forward to the team and the fans at the Millerntor. The talks with the club were very open and trustful, which quickly convinced me that it was the right step to take. This is a great opportunity for me to continue my development at an ambitious club with a philosophy that's a good fit for me."
