Matanovic pens deal with Frankfurt but will stay on loan for next two years

Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt have signed St. Pauli striker Igor Matanovic just before the end of the transfer period. The homegrown talent will remain with the Boys in Brown on loan until the end of the 2022/23 season, however, under the terms of an agreement reached with the player by the two clubs. No further details of the deal will be disclosed.

Matanovic rose through the club's youth ranks and made the transition to the senior squad last season, scoring one goal in 17 outings for the Boys in Brown. He had previously made seven competitive appearances for the Under-19 team, contributing three goals and two assists, and ran out 27 times for the Under-17s (19 goals, seven assists). The striker has also played twice for the Germany Under-18s (two goals) and three times for the Under-17s (two goals).

Reaction to the move:

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "It's an excellent concept that makes sense both for us and for Igor. He definitely has the potential to play a good role in the Bundesliga, so it was always clear there'd be interest from the big clubs, though he also knows what he has in FC St. Pauli, the team and the coaching staff."

Igor Matanovic: "I'm looking forward to the prospect of getting the chance to play in the Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt, but I'm equally delighted to be able to take the next steps in my development at St. Pauli. I have a lot to thank the club for and think this team and this league are the perfect place for me at the moment, so I'll be focusing totally on the job in hand in Hamburg."

Igor Matanović notched his sole league goal to date in the 3-2 win at Hannover - but it was oh-so important.
