Schmitz signs professional terms

FC St. Pauli have handed Marwin Schmitz his first professional contact just a few days after his 18th birthday. The Under-23 midfielder rose through the youth ranks and has been a regular member of the first-team training group since pre-season as well as featuring in the matchday squad several times.

Schmitz learned his trade in the club's youth academy and made a total of 31 appearances in the Under-17 and Under-19 Bundesliga during the 2023/24 season, contributing three goals and four assists. This season he made the transition to the senior squad as a member of the training group. He has featured in Bundesliga and DFB Cup squads ten times this term in addition to making 13 appearances for the Under-23s in the fourth-tier Regionalliga (one assist).

Reaction to the deal

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "Marwin has developed well in recent years, quickly adapting to the next-highest level each time, and has earned this contract with good performances. He's calm on the ball and his vision is remarkable for his age. We don't want to place too many expectations on him, however, and will continue build him up carefully through match practice in the Under-23s."

Head coach Alexander Blessin: "It's nice that in Marwin a promising talent from the academy sees his future at FC St. Pauli. He's given us a lot of joy so far and has the attributes to establish himself at senior level. He's also smart enough to know he has a lot of work ahead of him and can't afford to let up now."

Marwin Schmitz: "I'm delighted to get my first professional contract and above all to have the opportunity to take this step at FC St. Pauli. The team and the staff make it easy for young players like me to feel at ease on and off the pitch and focus completely on playing football. I obviously hope to be able to put myself in the frame for my first appearance in the Bundesliga by performing well in training."
