IRVINE: "WE HAVE A LOT TO LEARN FROM THIS GAME"

That was not how it was meant to go. The mood in the mixed zone was downcast after the 3-0 defeat against Mainz 05.

Head coach Alexander Blessin: "We're obviously very disappointed. We were looking for more. It's so annoying when you look how the game went and how the goals came about. We gifted it to them. It's tough to come back then, of course, though I felt we weren't far away, especially in the first half. What we take from it is that we need to give 100 per cent to hold our own and 95 per cent isn’t enough."

Jackson Irvine: "We have a lot to learn from this game. We can't gift them things like we did early on. We had no pressure on the ball in the first few minutes and were wide open. Everything we did in the last two games was solid and hard to defend. We didn't do that today and we were punished for it, though we had some good moments and a couple of situations in the box in the first half."

Hauke Wahl: "We didn't go to the limit as a team or as individuals and we have to be fair and admit that Mainz showed today that mistakes are punished very quickly and very hard in this league. We're obviously annoyed that we came away with too little today. We went into the game with high ambitions but didn't play anywhere near to our potential."

Nikola Vasilj: "Losing at home like that was a big blow. I think the margin of victory was too high, but they deserved it because they took their chances. We made it easy for them to create the chances and then it was hard to get back into it. Before the first goal I came out to clear it but at the last moment I realised I was going to arrive too late, and he got there first and stuck it away."

Johannes Eggestein: "Against Freiburg last week we saw you need to be efficient, and we weren't today, though you also have to say we were up against a Mainz side who dropped deep after the second goal. We made some individual errors and that can happen but overall we have to say we weren't solid enough, neither in defence nor in attack."

Eric Smith: "We had chances in the first half but had a lot of shots blocked. We didn’t manage to test the keeper. In the second half we didn't have the right intensity to score. Mainz were very aggressive and wanted it more than we did today. That’s not OK, especially when you're at home."

Robert Wagner: "It was very disappointing today. We went into it with big intentions but somehow didn't manage to show that on the pitch. We gifted them some strange goals and we saw what you need to do to pick up points and how easy it is to lose. I think Mainz got the third goal at the right time and we got caught on the break, which should never happen. It was tough towards the end and especially the phase before the break."

Bo Henriksen (Mainz head coach): "The first half was tough, but we got the two goals and had more control in the second half. We played a good team. The most important thing was not conceding today. I'm very pleased with the performance."
