Blessin very positive after Leipzig showing

The Boys in Brown put in an outstanding performance against Champions League side Leipzig for which they were rewarded with their first point of the season. After the game, the mood was one of satisfaction, even though it could have been three points instead of one.

Head coach Alexander Blessin: "On the one hand we're very pleased with the performance today. We talked a lot about the display at Augsburg, especially the first half, and wanted to show a reaction. We were very well organised and kept things tight, making it tough for Leipzig to find any space. We won a lot of good balls, switched the play quickly and created chances. What we can criticise is the haul because we could have made better use of some situations. I'm very positive after this performance. We'll take the point and the clean sheet. As Jacko just said, the performance sends out a signal and shows we've arrived in the Bundesliga. You can only do that by giving 100 per cent; 90 per cent isn't enough. We have to go to the limit in every game."

Jackson Irvine: "I'm not completely satisfied, but it was all right today in terms of the performance. Last week we learned the hard way what happens if we don't go to the limit. Today we showed how good we can be. Leipzig are one of the best teams in the world and we showed what we can do against them today."

Philipp Treu: "It was an amazing performance from us! We threw everything at it. It was a high-intensity affair and we had a huge chance at the end through Scott. The aim was to keep a clean sheet and we did that. The goals will come. I've rarely experienced a stadium as loud as it was today. There were moments where I was just thinking "wow", the way the fans urged us forward. It was remarkable. I think we've arrived in the Bundesliga with the showing today."

Nikola Vasilj: "I'm proud of the team for fighting really hard for our first point. We'll take a point even though we had some good chances and could have won it. In view of the last few games it was a really good display from the team today. We knew Leipzig could threaten at any moment. We defended really well and they found few answers against us. We can be very satisfied with that but we have to keep working hard. There's a long way to go. We hope things will go in the right direction in the games to come."

Oladapo Afolayan: "I'm very happy to play and help the team. It was an excellent team performance. We played with intensity, closed Leipzig down and made things difficult for them. It's an important point for us and the only thing lacking was a goal. We'd have deserved to win when you look at the chances but it's the little things that count in football and we want to keep improving."

Marco Rose (Leipzig coach): "It was a thrilling Bundesliga encounter all in all even though it ended nil-nil. FC St. Pauli were very good and thoroughly deserved the point. We had three or four situations in the first half where we were left breathing a huge sigh of relief. St. Pauli were well organised, switched the play well and caused us problems. We made a few adjustments at half-time and had much better control in the second half as far as their chances were concerned. At the moment, we're struggling to create chances and break through towards the opposition goal. It was too little today and that's a point we'll be working on."
