Johannes Eggestein joins Boys in Brown from Royal Antwerp

FC St. Pauli have signed a new striker in Johannes ‘Jojo’ Eggestein, who moves to Hamburg from Belgian top-division club Royal Antwerp. The Hannover native had previously played for Linzer ASK in Austria as well as Werder Bremen and TSV Havelse.

Last season, the striker made 16 Jupiler Pro League appearances for Royal Antwerp and featured in two Europa League qualifying and four group matches. Before that, Eggestein completed 46 Bundesliga appearances for Werder Bremen plus numerous outings in other competitions. He also played 11 times for the Germany Under-21s, having previously represented his country in other age groups. ‘Jojo’ Eggestein is the younger brother of SC Freiburg's Maximilian Eggestein. Father Karl Eggestein played for TSV Havelse in Bundesliga 2, among others.

Reaction to the deal

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: In Johannes Eggestein an ambitious striker joins us at the Millerntor. At 24, he's still young with potential to develop, but he already has lots of experience, both domestically and in Europe. We continue to follow our chosen path of strengthening our squad in a targeted manner and signing players who can help us immediately and also want to take the next step."

Head coach Timo Schultz: Johannes is an effective striker with a range of key skills and international experience. He will give us more options and variation in our attacking play. I'm delighted to welcome him to the squad and pleased that the competition for places up front is hotting up."

Johannes Eggestein: "I'm happy to be back in northern Germany. The talks with the St. Pauli officials and the football concept quickly won me over. I've been following the direction St. Pauli have taken for a long time and now want to give my all to help the club move forward, and Hamburg is an attractive city, of course – the Millerntor is another reason why I was happy to come here. It's a good package all round, so let's get started!"
