FCSP captain Jackson Irvine has played every minute of every game this season and also leads the statistics in terms of distance covered. In the run-up to the game at Stuttgart, the Australian took time out to speak to the media.
Jackson Irvine on…
…the points haul so far: "It's probably not as many as we would have liked and probably not as many as we deserve from some of our performances, but the feeling is still that we're going the right way. We have one more game this year to try to end on a positive note and that would give us strength going into the new year."
…opponents Stuttgart: "They're a top team that's capable of finding lots of different solutions. Technically, they have great players. We'll have to defend well and stay together. It'll be tough, of course, away from home against good opposition and we'll have to be clinical when we get our moments, whether that's in transition, in open play or from set pieces. We need to be at our very best, but we believe we can get something and go and win the game."
…leading the stats in terms of distance covered: "Playing at this level and what it means to me personally and the club and the team is so important. All the running has been part of my role in this team for a long time. I'm out there every minute of every game, which is probably another reason why I'm at the top end of that list. The other players who are doing the most kilometres are some of the top midfielders in the league and if you want to be competitive with them you need to be able to physically compete."
…the year 2024: "I could never have imagined this year would go the way it has. I got married, we won promotion and the championship and are playing in the Bundesliga, and there's the national team as well. Everything that's happened in the last 12 months has been incredible and you want to carry that into the new year, that's for sure."
…the festive period: "I'll be with my wife's family in Hull, where I used to play. It'll be nice to spend a few days with family nice and relaxed. That's the most important thing. We don't have any traditions at all. We spent last Christmas in Australia, this one we're in England. We're just looking forward to spending some time with people we love."
