Wahl: “We have to keep calm and rely on our ability”

The ball simply won’t go in. Another good performance against Borussia Dortmund at the weekend wasn’t enough to prevent the Boys in Brown from slipping to a fourth defeat in succession. Next up is a trip to VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday (15.30 CET). In the run-up, centre-back Hauke Wahl took time out to speak to the media.
Hauke Wahl on…
…the mood in the camp: "Obviously it’s hard to walk around in an extremely good mood when you’ve lost four games in a row, but we did expect there to be a phase when we lose more games, so we remain very optimistic. There’s a certain “now more than ever“ attitude in the camp now. And it’s always fun with the lads regardless of the results.“
…processing the Dortmund game: "We’ve been giving the same interviews for four weeks now. We’ve done well and we've been able to take lots of positives from the game, but in the end the opposition were different quality and beat us. It’s not a nice feeling, simple as that. And on Saturday you noticed that playing Borussia Dortmund at the Millerntor meant a lot to many people. I thought the atmosphere was extremely good and because we played very well in the first half we managed to get the crowd going and vice-versa, so it was obviously disappointing to come away empty-handed. As in the previous matches, a lot more was possible.“

Hauke Wahl (left) is targeting a clean sheet in the second game against Wolfsburg as well.
…the tweaks that have to be made: "Taking the lead would do us good. It’s extremely hard to play against us when we take the lead – we’ve already proved that, and I think every team who’s gone behind against us would agree. If we don’t get that goal, we have to defend even better to ensure we don’t concede. We won’t change our general style of play because we're on the right track. I’m not a fan of doing things for the sake of it and it makes no sense to chuck everything in after four matches. We have our strengths and we’ll draw on them. Obviously there are some nuances we have to improve. We have to do a touch better in the final third and defend a bit more consistently for 90 minutes, but that said we have to keep calm and rely on our ability.“
…the favourable position in the relegation battle: “I think all of us would have settled for it before the season started but that doesn’t mean we’re taking things easy. It’s a good situation but we could do with winning a game now.“
…the positive experience of last season: “Last season we looked certain to be going up but then we lost two games in a row and suddenly we went to Hannover on a Sunday just one point ahead instead of ten. Experiences like that are a tremendous help because we went through them and we know we can rely on each other and that everyone is there for each other.“
