Burgstaller joins Rapid Vienna

Striker Guido Burgstaller is leaving the Boys in Brown to join Austrian top-division club Rapid Vienna. The two clubs have agreed not to disclose any details of the transfer.

Burgstaller moved to the Millerntor from FC Schalke 04 at the start of the 2020/21 season. In his two seasons in the brown-and-white colours, he made a total of 57 competitive appearances, scoring 31 goals and providing 13 assists. The 33-year-old marksman had previously played for FC Nürnberg, Cardiff City and new club Rapid Vienna.

Reaction to the move

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "We would have loved to have him for the coming season, of course, because of the way Guido handled himself on and off the pitch, but he handed in a transfer request for personal reasons. We therefore worked together to find a solution that is fair for all sides. We wish Guido all the best for his professional and personal future."

Guido Burgstaller: "I spent two very nice years in Hamburg. I certainly won't forget the team, the fans and the successes we enjoyed together, but now the time has come for me when other things in my life besides football take on greater importance. I'm therefore very grateful to the officials at FC St. Pauli for making it possible for me to make the move back home. I'll continue to follow the club from afar, of course, and am keeping my fingers crossed for a successful new season."
