The Boys in Brown have strengthened their defence by taking centre-back Siebe Van der Heyden on loan from RCD Mallorca until the end of season after director of sport Andreas Bornemann agreed terms with officials of the Spanish top division club.
The 26-year-old Belgian began in the youth setup of RSC Anderlecht before moving to KV Oostende in 2018. Spells at FC Eindhoven and Union Saint-Gilloise followed. Van der Heyden made a total of 117 competitive appearances for the Belgian club, including 10 in the Champions League qualifying rounds and the Europa League. The left-sided player contributed three goals and three assists for Saint-Gilloise before joining RCD Mallorca in the summer of 2023, making a total of 13 competitive appearances. Van der Heyden also made one appearance for Belgium in 2022.
Reaction to the deal
Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "Signing Siebe gives us significantly more defensive options, as being a left-sided player he can be used both in central defence on the left flank. He also has the necessary experience on a very good international level to help us straightaway."
Head coach Alexander Blessin: "I'm delighted to have even more flexibility with Siebe. He's uncompromising in the tackle, both in the air and on the floor, and is very neat and tidy on the ball. His game is marked by a certain level of consistency and maturity that is sure to be of benefit to us."
Siebe Van der Heyden: "I'm happy to be given a chance to prove myself in the Bundesliga at FC St. Pauli. The team has been very solid defensively so far this season and I'd like to play my part in ensuring it stays that way. I'm very excited about experiencing the atmosphere at the Millerntor and my goal is to be out there on the pitch very soon."
