Wahl: "It's annoying to come away empty-handed"

The Boys in Brown sustained a narrow 2-1 defeat against a strong Dortmund side on Friday evening. Having had a point within their grasp, however, the sense of disappointment in the camp was tangible after the final whistle.

Head coach Alexander Blessin: "We're obviously a bit sad afterwards because we had a point in our hands just before the end and ended up losing the game. Dortmund had more of the play, as was to be expected, and we defended deep. From a solid base we made it very difficult for them to create chances. You can't keep them away from your goal all the time, especially with the dangerous balls they knock in from the half-spaces. And then they have a striker with incredible spring. After our equaliser I thought for a minute we were going to take a point. We could have defended better for their second goal – both out wide, where we should have doubled up, and in the middle, where we had three against one. All in all, we can be very pleased with the performance. The lads gave their all."

Hauke Wahl: "We defended well throughout and gave little away. It's only logical that Dortmund will have chances with the quality they have, but we were able to get a foot in quite often and in Niko we have a good keeper. Towards the end we had a huge chance to land a lucky punch and make it 2-2. All in all, it's annoying to come away empty-handed. What we take from the game is that we're a very difficult side to play against and we're always capable of making a mark up front. We didn’t give up and it's a performance we can build on."

Johannes Eggestein: "There was more in it today. We left everything on the pitch and were out of luck with the offside in the first half. It would have been a different game if we'd opened the scoring there. We were very solid at the back and we can build on that. We didn't have many chances, though we did have some golden opportunities like the chance for Dapo early on and the one for Adam just before the end. If that had gone in, we'd have taken a not undeserved point. Unfortunately, we just fell short."

Eric Smith: "We did well today and gave a good account of ourselves. We had a one-on-one with the keeper in the first half and a goal ruled out for offside. We got the equaliser and then conceded a second from a cross. As far as the performance is concerned, I'm proud to a point, but it's a disappointing result nonetheless. We have to turn our focus to Wolfsburg now. I hope we'll be good enough to claim our reward."

Dortmund coach Nuri Şahin: "It was hard going against a side who did a good job sitting back. We stayed calm in the first half and did well. It was clear it would take us a while to find some space. We had a few actions with crosses from the penetrative zone and runs in deep and we took the lead just before the break. After the restart we had some problems with our structure for 10-15 minutes but after that it was OK. We should have added a second but didn’t kill the game off and St. Pauli scored an unbelievable goal. We kept our composure, though, and scored a very nice goal. It was important to make it four home wins out of four and stay in contention at the top."
