"To lose by the narrowest of all scores is a sickener"

Our Boys in Brown turned in a strong performance against FC Bayern Munich, but in the end were unable to take anything from the game. After the final whistle, our lads looked back on the one hand happy with their own performance, but in light of the result they were understandably disappointed. Here are the post-match comments.

Head coach Alexander Blessin: "If in the end you lose only 1-0, then all in all you’ve done a lot right. We allowed them very few goal chances and in the first 20 minutes we got into the game really well. We knew that we wouldn’t get many chances from open play. We knew too that we’d perhaps have to take advantage of a corner to have any big chance. And we did have several corners, which not many teams achieve against Bayern. We get the ball on the counter-press and then lose it again. Musiala nips in between and scores such a fantastic goal. We should have had better communication and instead cleared the ball. We said at half-time that we wanted to stay solid and we’d then open up in the final ten minutes in order to try everything once again. But nothing much more came from the game. The fact that the team left everything out on the pitch is a positive. I can have no complaints there. To lose by the narrowest of all scores is a sickener. We did a lot right. We’re simply going to have to get the points from other games."

Jackson Irvine: "It’s definitely a bit frustrating. One moment from a world-class player decided the match. It was a tough game, one that we put a lot into. It was very close to how we wanted to play. We knew we wouldn’t get many chances. Defensively overall we were very solid. In the first half, we had our moments up front. The fans could see that we were in it. After the break, it was then no longer enough. Games like this don’t decide the season. But you do have to see what you can take from such games in order to improve."

Carlo Boukhalfa: "We did well, but in the end one situation decided the match. Individual quality played a role there too. Not many players would score a goal like that. We could have dealt with the lead-up to their goal better and perhaps simply booted the ball away. If you want to take anything from a match like this, you need to play the perfect game. Today, one situation cost us the point."

Johannes Eggestein: "We battled hard and put everything into it. The fans were sensational and gave us brilliant support. Ultimately, it was a wonder goal from Musiala that decided the game. Overall we defended well and in total too put in a good performance."

Vincent Kompany (Bayern Munich head coach): "We were playing against a very energetic, compact, disciplined team. Even after we scored, St. Pauli patiently kept to their game. At the end, they tried to increase the pressure. The win today is very valuable, especially considering the Leverkusen and Dortmund results. There are no easy games and today was not an easy games for us."
