Smith: "They had two attempts and one went in, it's so frustrating"

The disappointment was tangible after a late Augsburg equaliser tarnished an excellent defensive showing. Here's the pick of the post-match reaction.

Head coach Alexander Blessin: "We did really well in the first half. We kept things tight and gave little away. We had their long balls under control and won good possession in areas where we showed great tenacity. We had some good moments in transition and took a deserved lead. At half-time we said we wanted to play exactly the same way, but the game turned. We were inactive and not really in the tackles. We lacked patience and gave the ball away too often, but that said we still didn't give too much away. Augsburg scored with their first big chance, and it's obviously very annoying when you're on the verge of taking three points. In the first half of the season we probably would have gone on to lose a game like that, so even though it's two points dropped, we'll take the point."

Jackson Irvine: "We were very solid at the back today and only gave them two chances, the header that went over and the shot on goal. Augsburg had no solutions to prise us open. I can't remember the last time we allowed so few shots on goal, so it's all the more disappointing not to win the game. All things considered, it's not a bad result, even though we're disappointed not to take three points."

Eric Smith: "It was a tough game, as we expected. We knew we were up against quality opposition and Augsburg were one of the form teams. They only had two attempts on goal and one of them went in. It's frustrating. In the second half we were a bit too passive and did too little on the ball. We tired as the game wore on, we dropped back and couldn't create pressure situations anymore. What we take from the game is that we give little way when we play the way we did today."

Hauke Wahl: "We were close to winning it but let one on right near the end. Conceding an equaliser so late on is extremely annoying, but you can't defend everything in this league. After the interval we have to say we were no longer able to take the pressure off, but we defended superbly for 90 minutes. We would have liked to take three points, of course, but every point is important in the end. If someone had said we'd pick up seven points from the last three games, we'd have taken that right away. Looking at the results today it was a point gained."

Philipp Treu: "We're a bit down but we have to see the positives. We've taken seven points from the last three games and Augsburg are the form team at the moment. We kept them away from our goal, but obviously it hurts to concede an equaliser. In the last few games we've shown we can sit back occasionally. That resilience is our hallmark and so it's really disappointing that one slipped through today."

Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): "It was a game of two halves. St. Pauli were clearly the better team in the first. They got the goal and made things very difficult for us. They sat back and were very solid in defence. At half-time I tried to turn it round with a few adjustments. We changed the game, both with our formation and positioning and with the introduction of new players, and we had better control. We got a deserved equaliser towards the end. We knew how tough it would be today. It was important not to lose for the fourth game in a row and we're pleased with that."
